Spotlight Stealer- Red Sarah

Casanova has never looked so sexy…well when he’s is played by the UK burlesque and circus beauty Red Sarah. Renown for her fire skills and burlesque , I decided to get to know one of my favourite performers a little better…Not content with being a burlesque performer, drag king, circus artiste, fire charmer and teacher, this talented vixen is also a designer. Her creations ‘Red Ribbons‘ are wearable art adorning the bodies of many a performer.

The Red Sarah back story…

I ran away with the circus when i was 19 , but not just any old circus. The Invisible Circus were a street performance troupe who used to do installations in costumes draped in white blowing bubbles, nobody ever saw our real faces. I spent many years travelling and learning skills along the way. whenever i met someone with a skill i used to swap poi lessons for their skills and i still do to this day, Just because you teach doesn’t mean you should stop learning. I recently set up a fire school so that i could continue with my teaching under a more professional banner.

Spotlight Stealer qualifications?

15 years in Entertainment with a few performance related awards from Ministry of Burlesque , 21st Century Burlesque and Bizarre magazine.

“I absolutely love teaching almost as much as performing, the buzz from seeing someones shining face when they master a new trick or grasp something you have shown them is like nothing else.”

What inspires you?
Cartoons !! ,  no seriously with my teacher hat on what inspires me to teach is the lack of schools teaching people skills, rather than claiming to turn someone into a burlesque kitten i offer expert tuition in skills needed to be unique and stand out from the rest . My Fire classes are completely focused on safety. Seeing mediocre performances inspire me to teach people well in the hopes of helping to create better performers and in the end hopefully raise the standard .

Where can we find out more about the delightful Red Sarah?

Plus Size Vintage Shopping

Without wishing to bang on about plus sizes and how we arent catered for on the high street (I seem to be ok but my size 6 mate cant find anything adult looking…kid section doesnt spank of sexy dresses…thank god). I seem to be having a tough time finding plus size vintage. Now I am a size 16 which in some ways isnt too big in a lot of peoples eyes but I find is hard to locate much that fits me, let alone stuff with some tailoring that could be adjusted to fit.

So I decided to ask around and search myself.

With a call out on Twitter for all my lovelies I was inundated with nuggets of information on where to find the illusive ‘plus size vintage’.

Mrs BeBe (a fabulous plus size blogger) suggested looking in charity shops, trawling the vintage fairs but admitted she had no go-to shop. Even buying from repro vintage shops like Collectif didnt always ensure purchases were made as the plus sizes seemed to sell out.

I headed to Camden myself to check out the Collectif store and found 4 of the dresses I wanted to purchase were sold out in my size. BOOO but at least that means people are buying them right!? Collectif recently put out a Facebook status that they are looking to expand their plus size range so whilst not original vintage, there is at least another option. Lets not forget as the lovely Mrs BeBe suggested “just look out for anything with a vintage feel, stripes, dots, anchors, leopard, birds etc, so I can at least have a flourish in my day to day outfits!”.

Tweed jacket H&M (circa 2005), trousers and belt Oasis (circa 2009) and faux fur was a gift.

I then approached the likes of Tramp Vintage Boutique in Brighton who said that whilst they do stock plus size it seems people dont realise its there and so stays on the shelf (not good for business then).

My Twitter feed became a wash with ladies calling out for places to buy plus size vintage so here are my recommendations:

Forsaken Dreams Vintage (online/store)I have bought a few vintage pieces from this lovely lady. Good prices and lots of choice.

Candy Says (online) A selection of plus size always available. Good prices too.

Etsy (online) A huge slection available! Some real treasures bought here by me too.

Ebay (online) Great selection though bidding can get out of hand especially if you really want an item. Consider US version of Ebay as I have bought some real corkers off there. Watch out for custom charges though as they can sting a bit.

JAdoreVintageClothing (online) lots of sizes up to an beyond a size 18. Not for silly money either. Loving their sale mentality too: Cheaper than cheap!

If you are looking for more repro vintage items to build up your wardrobe then perhaps these lovelies:

Vivien of Holloway (online/store) – great items though VERY popular so be mindful that at vintage events there will be alot of ladies rocking these garments. Still great staples and perfect for customising!

HeyDay Vintage Style (online) I adore this company and even own a few items. Very traditional styling.

20th Century Foxy (online) lots of different garments on sale from various establised and new companies though most only go to a UK 16.

Pinup Parade (online) a great resource and shop of selected items. Sales here are always good but buy early as the items are always snapped up.

Rockabilly Pinup (online) a huge selection of repro vintage items from companies all over the world! One stop shop.

and lets not forget our own The Velvet Curtain shop. Often select plus size items for purchase.
